Engine: We all have an idea what an engine does it a car, it makes it go! But do we really know, when we lift the hood, what all those pipes and things do? I know I don’t but I know that they all have to work if I want to take my son to the park or to his friends birthday party.

These organs are like your engine, they process your food (fuel) and begin to break it down so that energy can be produced, nutrients can be absorbed and we can feel at our best. So what happens if these begin to malfunction? Well we don’t get enough nutrients and we become sluggish, we won’t want to exercise, we will get food cravings and you guessed it, we will put on weight!

So if we want to lose weight we need to make sure our engine is in tip top condition, simple right! Our program is like bringing your engine to a garage for a service. We look to restore the essential functions of your body and in doing so you are giving yourself a fighting chance at improving your overall health as well as losing or maintaining a healthy weight!

Fuel: Food is the fuel that our bodies use in just the same way that cars use fuel. There are many types of foods and millions of fad diets that offer short term benefits. What we need to do is have a “Normal” diet that gives our bodies the fuel it needs to perform optimally. The Atkins diet uses only proteins and there are many other diets that exclude carbohydrates or as was my experience in school the “Miraculous Apple Diet”. But in reality all we need is a normal diet, so our program is not about crazy fad diets, it’s about eating the foods you are familiar with, but for a purpose!

What our program does is teach you how to use food with a purpose! You are free to eat as much as you want, we just teach you how to combine foods that meet YOUR health objective!

Food – Sugars

I am not going to bore you with simple carbohydrates, complex carbohydrates, proteins and all that jargon, you can go to every other weight loss program for that. What I will tell you is this, the foods that we eat (fuel) are broken down into sugars and stored in our bodies. These sugars are used at a cellular level to produce ATP (energy) and it is this energy that makes everything happen.

So if we have the wrong foods, we can’t produce energy but more important than that is that if we cannot regulate our blood sugar levels we become over weight.

More importantly is that if we get spikes or drops in our blood sugar levels we then get food cravings and are more likely to look to that sugary snack to satisfy this sudden need. How many of have had our best weight  loss efforts undermined by these snacks?

Fuel Pump: Your car moves because the fuel is burned to produce energy and it is this energy that drives the pistons. When they are properly lubricated pistons can move feely and we get from A to B without problem. The fuel in your tank needs to get to your engine and to do that we need a fully functioning fuel pump.

In your body your heart is the pump that makes sure your cells (engine) can produce ATP (energy) and that you can get from A to B. To make energy blood carries nutrients, oxygen and sugars (fuel) to our cells and when this works correctly we have a smooth and happy journey!

Heart

Your heart is one very hard working organ, it pumps around 115,000 times per day and without it we simply die. Every beat of your heart is a series of electrical impulses that cause your heart to constrict just like wringing a towel. These electrical impulses are carried by electrolytes which we get from our foods. So what happens when we have a diet that is full of overly processed foods? Well we don’t get enough electrolytes and we can actually damage our heart. If we are nutritionally deficient we can get a lot of problems that will affect our cardio(heart)vascualr(arteries) system.

This can lead us to have increased blood pressure and arterial stiffness. Both of these can kill us!

Oil: Most of us are aware that oil is used to lubricate our engine it also helps to keep your engine cool. As you drive your oil will start to pick up debris and go from clear to a darkened colour. When you get your car serviced the oil is changed and from time to time we might use the dip stick occasionally and give a top up as needed.

The same applies to the fluids in our body, over time they too can pick up debris and if we are healthy these fluids will be cleaned by our in build cleaning systems. But what happens if the cleaning process fails? Well it leads us towards a  toxic sludgy build up that begins, over time, to damage our health.

Blood – Lymphatic System

More than just red stuff our blood is a carrier, every moment it pumps around our circulatory system and within it is oxygen, nutrients, antibodies and lots of other stuff that keeps us alive. Our Lymphatic system runs parallel our blood in a network of vessels.

When both are working well we receive an abundant supply of everything we need, we can fight diseases all the way up to cancer. However in just the same way that oil in an engine accumulates debris, the same applies to our blood and lymph. They can become over burdened with toxins then we begin to suffer ill-health. This is where we need our filtration systems functioning optimally so that we can get rid of all this toxicity. But what happens if these toxins cant be gotten rid of? The have to go somewhere, and where the go is our belly and that is why our belly fat is called “Toxic Fat”

Oil Filter: Dirty oil damages your engine, dirt and grime begin to make your car splutter and misfire. To overcome this problem your car has an oil filter and as its name suggests it filters the oil, taking away any gunk and helping to keep your engine running smoothly.

Well the exact same thing happens in your body, your blood accumulates junk too and this junk can be in the form of pharmaceuticals, fats, alcohol and lots of other things. So we have our own in built filter that works 24/7 to keep our blood as clean as possible. This filter is called the liver and it truly is an amazing organ. It is the only organ in the body that can rejuvenate, but its ability to do this is dependent upon it not being too toxic itself.

Liver

Without getting too technical I would like to tell you what your amazing liver does every day and you maybe surprised by some of these functions!

  • Removes toxins form our blood and passes them to our colon for excretion
  • Clearing the blood of drugs and other harmful substances
  • Regulating blood clotting
  • Production of bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion
  • Production of certain proteins for blood plasma
  • Regulates glucose (sugars) used to produce ATP (energy)
  • Regulates blood pressure
  • Regulates insulin levels (think diabetes)
  • Regulates oestrogen & testosterone
  • Resisting infections by producing immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream
  • Regulates cholesterol production and removal
  • Breaks down haemoglobin as well as insulin and other hormones
  • Conversion of harmful ammonia to urea (urea is one of the end products of protein metabolism that is excreted in the urine)
  • Destroys old red blood cells
  • Clearance of bilirubin (if there is a build up of bilirubin, the skin and eyes turn yellow)

When your liver us overworked, toxic residues can build up, causing inflammation that is associated with obesity. A stressed out liver can also cause fat to build up, especially around the belly. Added together, this can mean that no matter how much you restrict calories, weight loss is near impossible—unless you detox your liver.

Water & Coolants: Ok this might seem obvious, but our car needs plenty of water, if we don’t put enough water in the radiator our car cannot cool down and will overheat – nothing special there I hear you say! But what if I was to tell you that this is not dissimilar to your body? Let me explain;

Your body is made up of between 75%-90% water and this water is essential for our health not to mention our life. We can last weeks without food but we will die within days if we don’t have water. So why is this? Well when we are dehydrated it is like a radiator overheating, many of the systems that we rely upon begin to fail.

Our bodies are made up of billions of cells and within each cell are lots of essential organelle (little mini organs) some of these produce ATP (energy) called Mitochondria (little power generators) and others carry our DNA etc etc. What I am concerned with is water, well all these little organelle are suspended in a fluid and you guessed it, this fluid is essentially water. It is NOT tea, coffee, juices, beer, wine, fizzy drinks or anything else! But many people fail to realise this and try to get all the “fluid” they need from the aforementioned beverages – BIG Mistake!

We need plenty of fresh, clean water every day, up to 2 litres in fact, however many people drink little or no water and then they wonder why they are sick and toxic.

Urine – Sweat – Body Fluids – Cellular Fluids

Just as water cools an engine our sweat is also part of our bodies efforts at temperature regulation, but when we sweat we lose water from our body and as such we run the risk of dehydration and overheating. As we exercise it increases our metabolism (rate at which we burn calories) and our body produces more waste in the form of water from cells, urea from protein digestion and ketones from burning fat as energy as a result we will urinate more.

Water retention may occur if pressure inside the capillaries changes. Water (fluid) retention is also possible if something occurs that makes the capillary walls too leaky. If something goes wrong with capillary pressure or capillary wall permeability (wall becomes too leaky), excess liquid (fluid) will be released into the tissue spaces between cells. If too much fluid is released more and more of it will remain in the tissues, rather than returning to the capillaries, resulting in swelling and water logging (water retention).

Water Filter: OK so cars don’t have a water filter but our body does so for the sake of giving you all the relevant information lets pretend that there is a new car that actually has a water filter.

Most people have two kidneys though some are born with one. These organs are vital for health and in Traditional Chinese Medicine they are the root of our life and determine our longevity. In conventional medicine they also have many vital functions without which we will suffer ill health or ultimately die.

Kidneys – Bladder

Below I will look at some of the vital functions that your kidneys perform on a daily basis.

  • Waste excretion: There are many things your body doesn’t want inside of it. The kidneys filter out toxins, excess salts, and urea, a nitrogen-based waste created by cell metabolism. Urea is synthesized in the liver and transported through the blood to the kidneys for removal.
  • Water level balancing: As the kidneys are key in the chemical breakdown of urine, they react to changes in the body’s water level throughout the day. As water intake decreases, the kidneys adjust accordingly and leave water in the body instead of helping excrete it.
  • Blood pressure regulation: The kidneys need constant pressure to filter the blood. When it drops too low, the kidneys increase the pressure. One way is by producing a blood vessel-constricting protein (angiotensin) that also signals the body to retain sodium and water. Both the constriction and retention help restore normal blood pressure.
  • Red blood cell regulation: When the kidneys don’t get enough oxygen, they send out a distress call in the form of erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more oxygen-carrying red blood cells.
  • Acid regulation: As cells metabolize, they produce acids. Foods we eat can either increase the acid in our body or neutralize it. If the body is to function properly, it needs to keep a healthy balance of these chemicals. The kidneys do that, too.

Adrenal Glands: Sitting above the kidneys are the adrenal glands, which are part of our endocrine system.

  • The adrenal cortex is the outer part of the gland and it produces a hormone called cortisol (hydrocortisone) it regulates how the body converts fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to energy. It also helps regulate blood pressure and cardiovascular function. Another hormone produced by the adrenal cortex is called corticosterone and it works with cortosol to regulate immune response and to suppress inflammatory reactions.
  • The inner part of the glands called the adrenal medulla produce hormones such as adrenaline which is part of our fight or flight response.

So as you can see these two little glands are very significant when it comes to overall health and have a very significant role in weight management.

Part of this program looks to support both normal kidney function as well as regulating hormonal functions.

Exhaust: The by product of the combustion of fuel to produce energy to make your car move is the production of carbon monoxide, and this is released from your car via the exhaust system.

As you are aware the digestion of food for the absorption of nutrients and the production of energy also produces waste products and these are released from our body via our large intestine of colon. But our large intestine is responsible for a lot more than just getting rid of waste.

Large Intestine

The large intestine performs the vital functions of converting food into feces, absorbing essential vitamins produced by gut bacteria, and reclaiming water from feces. As the final part of your digested food moves through the large intestine, bacteria digest substances that are not digestible by the human digestive system.

The large intestine also helps in absorption of vitamins made by bacteria that normally live in the large intestine. These are friendly bacteria called commensal bacteria. There are over 700 species of bacteria that perform a variety of functions.

These commensal bacteria breakdown the undigested polysaccharides or fibers in diet into short-chain fatty acids. These can be absorbed by the large intestine by passive diffusion. The bacteria also produce gas (flatus), which is a mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, with small amounts of the gases hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen sulphide. These result from the bacterial fermentation of undigested polysaccharides.

These bacteria also produce large amounts of vitamins. The most important of these is Vitamin K and Biotin (a B vitamin). When the vitamin intake in diet is low, this can be an important source of these vitamins. A person who depends on absorption of vitamins formed by bacteria in the large intestine may become vitamin deficient if treated with drugs like antibiotics that kill the commensal bacteria.

Reducing acidity and protecting from infections

The mucosa of the large intestine also secretes bicarbonates to neutralise the increased acidity resulting from the formation of these fatty acids and other digestive components at earlier parts of the intestines.

The mucosal layer of the large intestine also acts as a mucosal barrier and protects from microbial infections and invasions.

Producing antibodies

The large intestine, particularly the appendix, is a confluence of several lymphoid tissues. These play an important role in immunity. The lymphoid tissues of the large intestine also help in the production of antibodies and cross reactive antibodies. These antibodies are produced by the immune system against the normal commensal bacteria but may also be active against related harmful bacteria and thus prevent infections.

So as you can see the condition of your large intestine is essential if you want maintain health and is of huge importance if you want to lose or maintain a healthy weight. That is why this program looks to regulate your digestive system and specifically your large intestine.

Well without blinding you with science of baffling you with Bull Sh*t you already know that not all foods are the same. It is this principle that we embody in our program. Why Do Diet Plans Fail?

This may seem like a big question but the answer is simple! But before I answer it I want to ask you to think. How do you feel when you are told what you can or cannot do? Do you feel happy or do you feel restricted? If you have been struggling with your weight for a while you already know what you shouldn’t eat so why should someone patronise you by telling you that you MUST eat this on Monday and that on Tuesday and so on. What happens when you reach your target weight? Well if you are like most people you will slowly slip back into the bad habits that caused the problem in the first place, do I hear someone say Yo Yo Diets?

Well when I created this program I created our Nutritional Information Guide as a way to address many different health issues and as such it needed to do a number of things;

Garcinia Cambogia

A small fruit that resembles a miniature pumpkin. It is indigenous to India and parts of Asia. The active extract called hydroxycitric acid (HCA), from its fruit and rind is popular in many natural weight loss products. It is used to suppress appetite and enhance fat burning. The theory behind garcinia cambogia is that HCA inhibits a enzyme called citrate lyase that helps to turn excess carbohydrates into fat. By inhibiting this enzyme, the body boosts carbohydrate oxidation i.e. it burns up the extra carbohydrates. In some double-blind studies using garcinia cambogia or a placebo, the HCA group doubles or triples their weight loss results over a 12 week period as compared to the control group.

Raspberry

Raspberries in general have long been known for their health-promoting benefits, but more specifically, raspberry ketones (a natural compound and powerful fat-burning hormone in these berries) can help burn body fat by: increasing lipolysis (fat breakdown); helping to increase the rate at which calories are burned; and helping to increase fat loss as part of a balanced diet. It is also worth noting that raspberries have a molecular structure that is similar to the structure of capsaicin, a component of capsicum – see above – accounting for their powerful thermogenic properties.

Kelp

Kelp is a type of large brown seaweed (algae) – a natural food that is very low in cholesterol and is a good source of dietary fibre, amino acids, riboflavin, vitamin C, vitamin K, pantothenic acid, zinc, copper, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium and manganese.

Most notably, kelp is a rich, natural source of iodine which can provide adequate levels to stimulate a sluggish thyroid and encourage a healthy metabolism.

An efficient metabolism is key for maintaining ideal body weight. Your metabolism, which is regulated by your thyroid gland, is the part of your body responsible for the way you use energy and burn calories; and iodine is the catalyst that can jump-start metabolic processes. The thyroid gland absorbs iodine, which is usually obtained through diet or supplementation, and subsequently releases the hormones that control metabolic function.

Vitamin B6

This vitamin is required for: blood and haemoglobin formation; calcium and magnesium metabolism; conversion of glycogen to glucose (to be used as energy); energy production; metabolism of foods (protein, carbohydrates and fats); and zinc absorption. It has been included for energy production and as a mild diuretic.

Siberian ginseng

This herb is considered to be an adaptogen – a substance that can help individuals to cope with physical and emotional stress. Ginseng is also widely used in eastern Asia to increase the ability to do physical work (i.e. it is used as a natural energiser). Helps to stabilise blood sugar and reduce cravings for sweet foods.

Glucomannan

This is a sugar made from the root of the konjak plant, which has been used for centuries in traditional Japanese cooking as a thickener or gelling agent. It is so renowned in Japan that it is widely referred to as the “broom of the intestines”. Glucomannan acts to create a sense of fullness (without leaving you feeling gassy or bloated) by absorbing water and expanding to form a bulky fibre in your stomach. It can therefore assist with appetite control and the regulation of cravings. When consumed, glucomannan also “sponges” up water in the digestive tract, reducing the absorption of carbohydrates and cholesterol and thus supporting weight loss.

Juniper Berry

Very effective diuretic – in the 1500’s a Dutch pharmacist formulated a new and cheap diuretic which he called gin. This drink caught on for obvious reasons (in combination with other ingredients). Juniper has been used for centuries as a remedy for urinary-tract problems including urinary retention, bladder inflammation & gallstones, gout as well as arthritis.

Juniper increases urine flow and destroys bacteria in the kidneys and bladder. Can prevent crystallisation of uric acid in the kidney, holding it in solution until passed in the urine. Juniper is an excellent blood cleanser and can also strengthen a weak stomach and improve digestion. The British Pharmacopoeia lists Juniper as a urinary tract disinfectant. The volatile oils in Juniper Berries destroy bacteria.
